We joyfully announce that Niels Tjoonk has joined the team as a scientific content marketer! At Single Cell Discoveries, Niels will be responsible for showcasing our work in blog posts, ebooks, whitepapers, videos, and social media content.
He obtained his BSc in biomedical sciences at Utrecht Utrecht. Later, that’s also where he got his MSc in cancer, stem cells & developmental biology. During his bachelor’s, he published a review on the diagnostic power of mutational signature analysis in BMC Cancer with Edwin Cuppen, Ruben van Boxtel and Arne van Hoeck.
He worked again with Van Boxtel during his master’s at the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology. Here, he tried to establish a cell line model mimicking t(8;21) acute myeloid leukemia. He familiarized himself with molecular cloning and CRISPR.
Science communication became his specialization during the second phase of his master’s, working with University Museum Utrecht and Utrecht Free Tours to design and city science tour. Before joining Single Cell Discoveries, Niels worked as a presenter and program curator for 2+ years at Utrecht University’s science communication platform Studium Generale/Het Programmabureau.
In his spare time, Niels still guides tourists around the city center; he likes to play Footy, read novels, and draw. Ask him about HBO’s Deadwood or fantasy writer Ursula Le Guin if you want to ignite his inner nerd. But steer clear from these subjects if you want to keep your ears.
We are happy to welcome Niels to the team!
